Why You Should Believe in the Virgin Birth of Jesus

Believing in the Virgin Birth of Jesus – Matthew -1:18-24

The virgin birth of Jesus

The virgin birth of Jesus, miracles, resurrection and immortality are topics criticized by those who want to demythologize the Bible.

The Fallacy of Rationalism in the Search for Spiritual Truth

Rationalism is the view that regards reason as the chief source and test of knowledge. It is the natural response of people ruled by sense-knowledge because that is where most of our information comes from.

The rationalistic criticism of Christianity is not a new perspective. Even the Pharisees implied that Jesus was the illegitimate son of Mary in John 8:41. The Talmud called him “Yeshu’a ben Panthera”, promoting the story that He was the illegitimate son of a Roman soldier named Panthera. This was only a poor attempt to defame Jesus. They used this to stop people from converting to Christianity. Later, even some “scholars” fell for and accepted this unsupported and ridiculous theory.

Understanding Spiritual Truth

Because I was a scientist and an atheist before becoming a born-again believer, I can understand this skeptic view. It does not correspond to the normal experience of many people.

Nevertheless, the Bible clearly explains that we cannot understand spiritual things just with our logic. We must discern them spiritually (1 Corinthians 2:14). This is because the rationalistic approach uses only physical evidence. However, spiritual things, by their nature, transcend the physical world even if they have an impact on it.

I am not an advocate for mysticism. I did research in Quantum Mechanics. This field of science shows that existing dimensions that we cannot directly see, make it difficult for us to understand events in the dimension we can see.

Similarly, we cannot understand spiritual things when we limit our knowledge to the physical world. The unaccounted for spiritual dimension will always break down a logic, based solely on the physical world.

Christianity Is Supernatural

The same principle applies to Jesus’ miracles, resurrection and immortality. However, all these concepts are central and unique to Christianity (1 Corinthians 15:12-14). Denying them makes the Bible a tale of no value.

“Demythologizing” the Bible does not help us to understand the Bible. It distorts the truth in it. Our approach will fail because it tries to resolve a spiritual problem excluding the spiritual reality.

In my search for the truth, when I realized that there is a spiritual dimension besides the physical one, my perception of these things changed. When I was born-again, as Jesus said, I started to see and understand the kingdom of God (John 3:3).

You Can Have the Proof: The Truth Works

I believe that we have the proof that the virgin birth of Jesus, Jesus’ miracles and His resurrection are true. The miracles and the power of God we can experience and see today when we are born-again are the proof.

Christianity is not a philosophy resulting from man’s ideas. It is not even a religion developed by men trying to devise ways to reach God. It is God revealing Himself to us and showing us the way to connect with Him through His Word. The Word of God is truth (John 17:17, Psalm 119:160) and even today, achieves what it promises (Isaiah 55:11).

So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11)

You Must Be Born-Again

Jesus said that you must be born-again to enter in the spiritual realm (John 3:6). Then, your faith is no longer based on man’s wisdom but on the power of God (1 Corinthians 2:4-5).

Many who call themselves Christians, lose their faith today because they have not come into this spiritual experience or have lost it by following traditions and doctrines of men (Mark 7:13).

Jesus did not come to start another religion but to announce and establish the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33, 12:28, Luke 4:43, 8:1, 9:2, 11, 10:9, John 3:3, 5).

Selected Links on the Virgin Birth

Following are a few selected links for the virgin birth of Jesus.

Some of these references explain various interpretations of and objections to the virgin birth of Jesus and I do not need to present these ideas again.

I do not agree with many of the ideas presented in these references. Some of them are helpful and they will strengthen you. Others will confuse, weaken and even destroy your faith.

Jesus warned us to take heed to what we hear (Mark 4:24, Luke 8:18). We must learn to discern when the ideas we encounter do not line up with the Word of God. In such cases, we must simply reject them.

You may say that I am biased, but for me the Word of God is a much more reliable source than other theories.

How Was the Virgin Birth of Jesus Possible?

From a biological perspective, what must have happened when Jesus was born? This is not a blog on biology, and for more information, I refer you to the following links:Jesus' DNA

Summarizing and simplifying the information in these articles:

  • Reproduction can be sexual or asexual.
  • Sexual reproduction involves the male fertilization of a female ovum
  • Asexual reproduction happens when an unfertilized ovum starts to multiply. Asexual reproduction produces an organism identical to the parent because it has identical DNA. For this reason, asexual reproduction can only produce female organisms. Although this is not seen in humans, it can be seen in some higher species but infrequently and in specific conditions.

Based on this information, the Holy Spirit must have either:

  • modified the DNA of Mary’s egg to produce a boy and then triggered multiplication of the ovum, or
  • planted a fertilized egg in her.

This is how Mary became pregnant with Jesus (Matthew 1:18, 20, Luke 1:26-38). I favor the second view, but, no matter how this happened, the virgin birth of Jesus was the result of God’s supernatural intervention. God created Jesus as He did Adam. Paul calls Jesus the last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45-47). Jesus was the Son of God (John 3:16).

The Miracle of the Virgin Birth of Jesus

The virgin birth of Jesus was a miracle. Believers can see miracles happening even today because God does not change (Hebrews 13:8). The scriptural view is that with God all things are possible (Luke 1:30-31, 34-37, Matthew 19:26, Mark 10:27, 14:36).

After that time, Mary had a normal pregnancy. The fetus grew in her womb and that resulted in a normal birth of a baby boy (Luke 2:6-7).

Why Is the Virgin Birth Important?

The virgin birth of Jesus’ is critical for Jesus ministry. Being born directly from God, He did not inherit the sin of Adam.

Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned (Rom 5:12)

This qualified Him who knew no sin to take our sins on Himself that we may be made righteous by believing in Him (2 Corinthians 5:21).

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21).

If Jesus was not born from God’s intervention, He could not have carried out His ministry as the Messiah and take our sins. He would have needed salvation from His own sins. In that case, the New Testament would not be true and our sins would not be forgiven.

Further, Jesus would not have fulfilled the prophecies on the Messiah. He would be an impostor. (See “The Trilemma – Lord, Liar or Lunatic”, Chapter 7 in “Evidence that Demands a Verdict” by Josh McDowell, HERE’S LIFE PUBLISHERS, INC.)

However, if you are born–again you know that your sins are forgiven (Colossians 2:13), that you are a new creature in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17) and that the prophesies about the Messiah in the Bible are true and Jesus fulfilled them (Matthew 1:22-23).

You Shall Know the Truth and You Shall Be Free (John 8:32)

Many unbiased skeptics who took the time to search the Bible concluded and experienced that the Bible reveals to us the truth and that the Gospel is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16).

I know when an idea is right by the results it produces. There is overwhelming evidence that the Bible produces the results it promises when we understand and believe it.

I am convinced that the reason some reject the truth is that they are spiritually blind. The Bible shows that there are reasons why we can be mentally brilliant but spiritually blind.

And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. (John 3:19-20)
