The Manifestation of the Sons of God

Children of God1 John – Chapter 3 – The Manifestation of the Sons of God

God’s plan for the world is to manifest the Sons of God. He is the one who has made it possible by sending Jesus to die for us. We cooperate with His plan by placing our faith in what Jesus has done for us.

1 John 3:1-3 – Now We Are the Sons of God

These verses give us a powerful revelation.

We often tend to focus on our shortcomings and weaknesses. Nevertheless, John points out to God’s perspective. God loves us so much that He calls us His children (or sons) and we really are God’s sons, now.

We can translate the word for children also as sons. The difference often implies a different level of maturity (Romans 8:14). God’s purpose and plan is to manifest the Sons of God (Romans 8:19). Our salvation is the transformation process described here.

Who Knows God, Knows also His Sons

The world does not understand this truth because it does not know (Greek: eido = see, discern, understand) Him and cannot discern us. However we know that when He will reveal Himself we will be like Him because we will see (discern) as He is (2 Corinthians 3:18).

The evidence that we are His sons is that expecting to become like Him motivates us to purify ourselves, as He is pure.

 The Secret for Spiritual Success

To see ourselves as God’s Sons and expecting to become like Him is an important secret for spiritual success. It changes how we see ourselves and how we behave.

If we focus on our weakness, we give power to them. If we focus on what we could become, we will act so. This is why sin consciousness make sin stronger, while righteousness consciousness help us to overcome sin.

All our progress (deliverance, salvation) is by faith, not by our strength (Ephesians 2:8-10). Faith in what He has done sets us free (Hebrews 12:2).

1 John 3:4-8 – The Sons of the Devil Sin

The opposite is true for the sons of the devil. The devil sinned from the beginning and those who sin are his children (1 John 5:17, Ephesians 2:2-3).

Sons of GodJesus came to destroy all the works of the devil. Those who abide in Him do not sin but practice righteousness, as He was righteous (1 John 2:6).

1 John 3:9-10 – Righteousness Is the Evidence of the New Birth

The sons of God are born from God’s seed. As God’s seed remains in them, they cannot sin.

Therefore, we can see who are the sons of God and the sons of the devil by what they practice. The firsts practice righteousness. The others practice lawlessness.

 1 John 3:11-18 – Love One Another

From the beginning, God commanded us to love one another and not to do what Cain did, who murdered his brother, Abel.

Cain murdered his brother because hated him. He hated Abel because Abel practiced righteousness. For the same reason those who are not born of God will hate you.

Those who do not love abide in death.

Jesus Is Our Example of How to Love

God loves the world (John 3:16). He demonstrated Hid love for us when we were still sinners by sending Jesus (1 John 4:9, Romans 5:8-10).

Love is not just feeling good. Jesus demonstrated His love for us by giving is life for us. We too must love our brothers by what we do, not just by what we say.

1 John 3:19-24 – How to Receive All We Ask

Having Confidence before God

We want to receive what we ask. Here is the secret to have it, “If our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God and we receive from Him anything we ask because we obey His commands and do what pleases Him.” (1 John 3:21-22)

Developing a Sensitive Heart

This chapter does not tell us to become legalistic. It tells us to develop a heart sensitive to the will of God.

You are a child of God. As you grow, your soul changes, not your spirit. You develop the understanding. Your attachments are re-directed by God’s will. God heals your hurts and balances your emotions. The Word of God re-aligns the beliefs of your heart. You experience an inner transformation and you move from faith to faith and from victory to victory (Rom 1:17).

We expect more from a child as he grows. Equally, God expects that your walk reflects His will.

This is how we become like Jesus and the purifying process involved in it (1 John 3:2-3).

Questions to Consider

  1. What is your experience with this process?
  2. Was it a steady advance or an irregular path?
  3. What were the factors affecting your progress, both positive and negative?
  4. How can you accelerate it?
  5. What practical advice does the Word give us about it?
