Verse Selection

Old Testament Priesthood

With the establishment of Ceremonial Law, came the need of the priesthood to perform the ceremonies. The priests were appointed by God to be the intermediaries between the people and God (Heb 5:1-4) and offered sacrifices for the propitiation of the sins of the people. This is why the names of the tribes of Israel were engraved on the stones of the breastplate.

New Testament Perspective

Looking at all this from a New Testament perspective, we can see that the ministry of the High Priest was a type of the ministry of Jesus (Heb 7, 8, 9 and 10).

These Old Testament forms of worship were given for that time and not as something for the present day church to imitate. They were shadows of better things to come (Heb 10:1). Further, there were major differences between the ministry of the High Priest and that of Jesus as is pointed out in Hebrews 5 and 7.

The High Priest Garment

The description of the High Priest garment is rather complex and is much better understood by looking at the drawings on this link.

Again, the different parts and material are associated with spiritual symbols but today we have the real thing and a better understanding as only in Jesus, the symbolism was accomplished and God’s requirements were fully met.

The Purpose of the Garment

These garments were made to give “glory and beauty” (Exo 28:2) but these were only external, not spiritual. Men look at outward appearances but God looks at the heart (1 Sam 6:17). The true “glory and beauty” that Jesus gives us is internal and spiritual. It gives us a new nature (2 Cor 5:17-18, Rom 9:23, 1 Cor 3:7, 2 Cor 3:9, 3:18, 1 Pet 3:4) and eternal life (John 3:15, 6:54, 10:28, 1 John 5:11).

What Is Your Experience?

If you have been involved in an outward oriented religion, you must know its lack of power. If you know Jesus, you also know the difference that He has made in your life. Please share your experience.

Prayer of Faith

Thank you Heavenly Father for the glory and beauty you give us through faith in Jesus. In the Old Testament men looked at the physical things for salvation but it did not work. Today many look at the mental things for salvation, but it does not work as well. I know that the only way is through faith in what Jesus has done and by walking in the Spirit that we can grow from faith to faith and glory to glory. I still have a long way to go, but I know that this works where everything else fails.

Holy Spirit help me to always keep my eyes on Jesus.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen!

Amaizing representation of our High Priest Jesus here from the old testamen through Aaron’s garmen. Yes, were are living stones carried into God’s presence through Christ’s sacrifice and each one of us has his/her own name graved on one of those stones. Thank you Jesus. I was also blessed by the fact that, Holy garments express glory and beauty. When we keep our spiritual garments clean before the Lord, people can’t see something else except glory and beauty from Christ in us!

My family was never religious but i grew up in an Orthodox (greek-but bulgarian) culture. Everything my family does is symbolic with idols, icons, incense and saint worshiping. This is of course taken from the confusing Orthodox religion because no one reads the Bible and so they believe everything they are told because they dont know otherwise. Often when i struggled in the past i would go to church to light a candle for the living and for the dead. I never understood that or anything else really. Everything i have experienced before i met Jesus was external and was doing it because i was told ‘thats how you do it’. Well, it didnt do anything for me except be hungry for the truth, which is a good thing turns out. When i accepted Jesus a world was introduced before me that i never knew. Embracing Him changes my life and me internally. I now know that He i everything i need. Praise the Lord! Thank you Jesus.

As a young boy I was raised as a Roman Catholic. A lot of what we learned were rules and prayers that we repeated. I slide away as it did not help me in everyday living. I was not satisfied. I was lost and started to search for the real thing. Finally when I had reached a dead end I surrendered to Jesus and He gave me a new start in my life. Finally I found the real thing, that made a real change in my life. Thank you Jesus.

  4. CathyH says:

As a young person I was never taught or exposed to any type of religion. Perhaps this was a blessing as I didn’t have any preconceived notions. I did look at religion from the outside and found there was no power in it to transform people.
Thank you Lord for your Holy Spirit ,that can minister to us no matter what our background!

Thank you for sharing. When we have the truth we also know what we have. Life is different because Jesus gives us eternal life. Nothing else can do that.
