In reading the notes to the Gospel of John, I found it interesting to learn that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in OT was largely reserved for the spiritual and national leaders of Israel while. How blessed we are under the New Covenant, as the HS is for every believer.

Mary`s faith response to the Angel Gabriel (in contrast to Zacharias`s unbelief) and her attitude are noteworthy. She submits her future to God`s will. That`s a lesson of obedience for us!

A couple of things stand out for me today in reading Luke chapter 1. I am in awe of God’s love towards us that He had a plan for our salvation! That Elizabeth and Mary believed without question… a wonderful example for us to follow, for vs 37 “ For nothing is impossible with God.”
I was also stuck that in vs 14 it says John would be filled with the Holy Spirit from birth. John had the comforter, the helper from the beginning to help him in his ministry! The meaning of the name John is “God is gracious”. We serve a gracious God!

Luke 1:5-6 gives us a sense of the character and the commitment to God, that Zacharias and Elizabeth had. They lived by and obeyed all the commandments and ordinances of God. No easy task. No doubt that as the parents of John the Baptist he was given parents that would raise him in the ways of the Lord. Something that John would need, for the mission that God gave John. God had a plan…..

Why was John “… never to take wine or other fermented drink, …. ” ? (Luke1:15)

In the OT, Nazarites were people who dedicated themselves to God. They were an example and symbol of holiness, just as a leprous was the symbol of decay and of sin. The bible gives a few examples of people who were Nazarites from birth, like John the Baptist. Anything producing decay was a symbol of corruption and sin, for this reason even yeast and anything produced by a fermenting process was symbolically unclean, even bread. Only unleavened bread was kosher and was used ceremonially. Wine is also produced by fermentation and for that reason was regarded as symbolically unclean (Num 6:3). Further, wine is an intoxicating drink, it impairs our abilities to make the right decisions and thus can make us sin.
