1 John – Chapter 5: 4-5
Faith is part of our constitution (Romans 12:13). You may not know how to use it, or even worse, you may use it against yourself.
Your faith is what you believe.
God shows you in His Word what you should believe to receive His blessings.
The previous article (1 John 5:1-4) shows us the great power of believing. Our beliefs have the power to make us connect with God and create in us the amazing transformation of re-birth.
New Creatures in Christ
Being born of God is a spiritual event but it touches all aspects of your life. You truly become a new creature. If you are in Christ, all old things have passed away and all things have become new. Now all things are of God (2 Corinthians 5:17-18).
Do you believe that? What has been your experience? On what is your belief based?
The Power of Believing That Jesus is the Christ
It is interesting to note that in “whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God” (1 John 5:1), the word “believes” in Greek is πιστεύω which is a verb meaning “to believe” or “to be persuaded of”.
Are you fully persuaded of this truth?
Now, 1 John 5:4-5 says that “he who is born of God overcomes the world, and what makes us overcome the world is our faith”. Faith in Greek is πίστις that is the noun corresponding to the verb given before and means “belief” or “persuasion”.
These verses show the power of believing.
If you are born again this power has already performed a mighty miracle in you.
As a Born Again Believer, You Have Overcoming Power
With your faith in Jesus (belief), you can overcome all the powers in the world. This includes:
- The power of Satan
- The lust of the flesh
- The lust of the eyes
- The pride of life
- Physical strength
- Sickness and pain
Jesus Said It
Jesus taught this truth in many places of the Gospels:
- According to your faith be done unto you (Matthew 9:29)
- All things are possible to him who believes (Mark 9:23)
- What things you desire when you pray, believe that you receive them and you shall have them (Mark 11:24)
- Supernatural signs shall follow those who believe (Mark 18:16-18).
Jesus Demonstrated It
Jesus demonstrated this power through the miracles He performed and His resurrection.
He did these miracles, not because he was God, but as a man empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38). He had emptied Himself of equality with God and became a man (Philippians 2:6-8 NASB) to be our Savior and our example.
For this reason He could say, “He who believes in Me, the works that I do he shall do also and greater works than these” (John 14:12).
Believe in What You Already Have
Believers are the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). You have the supernatural power of God working in you (1 John 4:4). It is working according to your beliefs.
When you understand the difference between our thoughts and your beliefs, and know how to change your beliefs, you will be able to operate in the Kingdom of God (John 3:5-6) as Jesus did when He was on earth.
By meditating on the Scriptures you can change your beliefs (Psalm 1)
The new birth enables you to overcome the flesh and to live in the Kingdom because God’s Spirit dwells in you .
The early church was not perfect. Most believers were slaves and poor. Ignorance and heresies divided the church just as today. Yet, the power of the Roman Empire could not stop it.
Live as a Conqueror
If you are not doing it already, start accepting, confessing and meditating on Scriptures on the power of believing residing in you.
Say “I am more than conqueror in Christ who loved me.” (Romans 8:37)
or, “I can do all things in Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)
Let the Word dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16) and you will be richly rewarded. You will feel different as soon as you start applying these principles.
Then share the results of your faith. With your heart, you believe unto righteousness and with your mouth, you confess unto salvation (Romans 10:10)
